How are gas operators navigating the difficult gas environment in 2024?

Pressured by sub-$2/MMBtu prices, many US producers have decided to cut spending on gas-directed drilling and completion activity and to scale back production in 2024. But there are signs of price improvement along the futures curve in late 2024 and thereafter, due in part to the arrival of new LNG facilities, giving operators reason for optimism. In this episode, Jeremy Beaman, natural gas news editor, talks with Bryan Mcnamara and Imre Kugler, directors of upstream research, about how natural gas producers are approaching a difficult price environment and what their plans are for 2024 and 2025.Register for Global Power MarketsMore listening options:

Interactive: Platts Renewable Energy Price Explorer

Market values of European wind and solar fell sharply in February amid strong supply, Platts Renewable Energy Price Explorer shows. The Explorer shows the "capture price" renewable energy generators receive based on hourly output and pricing data on a monthly basis. As such capture prices take account of the cannibalization effect caused by Europe's growing fleet of solar and wind farms and are a more accurate reflection of value than average day-ahead wholesale power prices.Spanish wind and solar capture prices were lowest across the twelve European capture price assessments by Platts for S&P Global Commodity Insights with daily values ranging from zero to Eur88/MWh.Capture rates fell to 77% for Spanish wind and 81% for Spanish solar. In Germany, capture values for on- and offshore wind halved year-on-yearUK offshore wind daily capture values ranged from GBP32/MWh to GBP76/MWh, while the capture rate rebounded to 95%.Overall, February wind generation across Europe’s big five markets tracked by Platts’ assessments jumped 40% on year to 40 TWh, while solar output fell 2% on year to 8 TWh.For further information, see methodology or contact ci.support@spglobal.comThe dial chart shows monthly wind, solar, nuclear, gas and coal-fired generation across Europe's five biggest power markets.
