Canadian Wheat Assessments Commentary

  • Canada wheat exports double in week ended May 5
  • Canadian rail strike delayed pending safety review

Platts Canadian Western Red Spring Wheat FOB Vancouver basis values were steady May 10 with much of the market sidelined by the release of US Department of Agriculture data.

“The global wheat outlook for 2024/25 is for slightly lower supplies, increased consumption, modestly higher trade, and reduced stocks. Supplies are projected to decrease 2.2 million tons to 1,056 million with production projected at a record 798.2 million tons, but lower carry-in stocks for several countries, most notably China and Russia, more than offset higher global production,” the USDA said in its May 10 report.

Minneapolis spring wheat futures rallied further May 10 in response to the USDA WASDE report; the July contract rose 16.25 cents on the day to settle at $7.20/bushel.

Canadian government officials are seeking a review of safety implications from the potential rail strike, which was originally expected to begin as early as May 22. The pending safety review is likely to delay any strike action, according to reports widely circulated May 10.

While trade interest during the planting season typically slows, strength in wheat futures and an improving weather outlook for Canadian prairies have kept sellers a bit more active in the market.

FOB Vancouver 13.5% CWRS wheat basis prices were still holding firm ahead of the rail strike, even with the start date likely pushed back. Overseas feedback validated that prices were relatively flat for July forward, with July basis values holding steady in the low 100 cents/bushel for the time being.

The Canadian position in the May 9 Japan wheat tender was said to have sold around 85-90 cents/bu over MGEX September futures, with grain for July-August shipment, according to source feedback. Japan typically purchases Canadian wheat with a minimum protein content of 13.8%.

Canada's wheat exports totaled 721,400 mt in the week ended May 5, more than double the volume from the week prior, Canadian Grain Commission data showed May 10. Wheat exports so far in marketing year 2023-24 (August-July) stood at 19.44 million mt, 2.57% lower than the previous year.
