Platts assessed Chinese copper import premium at $18/mt plus London Metal Exchange cash, CIF China, April 24, for LME-registered normal brands of electrolytically-refined cathode, down by $2/mt on the day and down by $14/mt on the week.
The Platts-assessed top ER brand differential was at $8/mt and the solvent-extracted/electrowon differential at minus $5/mt, S&P Global Commodity Insights data showed.
LME's 3-month copper futures price increased by 25% from last October, and end-users were not able to digest surging costs at the moment.
“Fabricators are just relying on existing inventory and refrain from restocking,” a trader said.
Scrap was also more popular compared with refined copper due to lower cost, adding difficulties for copper smelters to sell finished products.
At the same time, as the copper import arbitrage window to China stood at a loss of Yuan 850/mt ($117/mt) level, import interest from traders was lackluster.
Chinese smelters started to export cathodes by delivering them to LME warehouses.
Solvent-extracted cathodes were heard traded at minus $10/mt for prompt arrival.
A bid was heard around $5/mt for normal ER brand, early May arrival and May pricing, against an offer heard at $30/mt.
“There is no spot liquidity in this market,” a trader said.
Tradable values were heard at $40/mt on a CIF Southeast Asia basis and $10-$30/mt on a CIF China basis for normal ER brands.
