Platts Carbon Credit Assessments Commentary

  • HHD falls at a new all-time low of $3.90/mtCO2e
  • Turkish renewable premium to India narrows

Mixed movements were seen in the voluntary carbon market on May 3. A price drop was seen in household devices, renewable energy, methane collection and industrial pollutants prices, while Platts CEC saw an uptick.

Several segments of the VCM were gripped by bearish sentiment, with the Platts Household Devices Current Year price shedding a further 5 cents and hitting a new all-time low at $3.90/mtCO2e.

The price has shed 15 cents throughout the week and 55 cents month to date, according to data from S&P Global Commodity Insights.

An India-based broker said the segment continues to be oversupplied, adding that buyers remain reluctant.

Platts heard a 25,000 mt batch of GS certified safe water credits sourced from Bangladesh with 2021-2022 vintages offered at $6.50/mtCO2e. Another batch of GS certified safe water credits of 146,000 mt volumes sourced from Rwanda with 2021-2022 vintages was also heard offered at $6.50/mtCO2e.

Turkish renewable premium towards India narrows

The Platts Renewable Energy Current Year price was assessed at $1.60/mtCO2e, dropping 5 cents on the day.

“In general, the demand is low,” a Turkey-based developer/broker said. The source added that while the voluntary carbon market grapples with intense scrutiny, end-buyers have increasingly raised concerns about additionality for renewable energy credits.

Platts heard from the source of 50,000 mt GS certified Wind credits with a 2018+ vintage from Turkey bid at $1.80/mtCO2e, offered at $2.50/mtCO2e. The source said they could not accept this low bid, however, and were holding on to the volume for a better price.

The bearish prices seen for renewable energy credits in Turkey do not consider the operational costs, additional fees and social benefits involved in developing renewable energy projects, the source added.

The source also valued the Turkish premium toward India in the renewable energy segment at 20-30 cents/mtCO2e, while a separate India-based developer valued the premium at 20-28 cents on April 25, narrowing from the 50-60 cents/mtCO2e range reported to Platts from multiple sources over the trading month of April.

The premium has been observed narrowing due to an oversupply of renewable energy credits in Turkey, the source said, echoing the sentiment from multiple sources over the trading week.

On whether the Core Cabon Principles (CCP) launched by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (CCP) will help to increase price levels, the source said that they have not observed any impact of the discussions surrounding CCP labels yet.

The ICVCM said May 2 carbon credits with a high-integrity label are set to appear on the market not long after the first decisions on project methodologies, which covers categories that include projects related to methane from mines and landfill sites, which are made in June.

GS Vichada project offers heard up to $25.50/mtCO2e

Platts heard several offers for GS certified Afforestation/Reforestation from the Vichada project in Colombia.

Two separate batches of 50,000 mt credits, one with a 2020 vintage and another with a 2022 vintage, were heard offered at $23.75/mtCO2e and $24.25/mtCO2e, respectively. Platts previously heard on April 12 an indicative value for the same project with a 2022 vintage at $24/mtCO2e.

Another batch of Vichada project credits with a 2020 vintage was heard offered at $25.50/mtCO2e, although the volume was unspecified.

Platts Natural Carbon Capture Current Year price was assessed stable on day at $12.40/mtCO2e.
